NOTES: In 1989, Rolex introduced the Explorer 14270, the successor of the 1016, at the Basel Fair with the new caliber 3000 (an upgrade from the 1570) as well as making the shift to sapphire crystal, gloss dial and applied hour markers. This marked a shift towards combining sport and luxury in their watches. This era witnessed changes in design codes for iconic tool watches, including the Submariner. The 14270 experienced subtle yet significant design modifications, surprising Rolex customers. While functionally similar to its predecessor, the watch featured a dramatically updated dial and a new movement. Over the next 11 years, Rolex continued to experiment and refine the Explorer 14270 design, leading to five variations:
1989-1991: Blackout Dial T Swiss
1991-1993: Pinholes Case T Swiss
1994-1997: No holes Case T Swiss
1998-1999: Swiss Only dial - Luminova
1999-2001: Swiss Made Dial - SuperLuminova
The dial changes were probably more obvious than case changes in demarcating the evolution of the watch from 1989 to 2001.
