There are 3 racing configurations that appear on Speedmasters in the late 1960's and early 1970's, of which the first 2 are with Caliber 321 (145.012-67 mostly) and black/red dials and the third has a grey/orange dial with a Caliber 861 (145.022-69). Although there are racing dials on Seamaster and Speedmaster MKII as well, the most sought after remain the Speedmaster moonwatch case style.
The configuration found on this 145.012-67 has a unique attribute, it is the only Speedmaster that Omega ever made with 'small registers'. In fact, in order to fit the wide checker track around the dial, the small registers allow for the tritium lume plots to fit entirely on the raised part of the dial. This configuration is also called the 3 line ‘professional’ dial as there is also a 2 line dial without the text Professional on it. What is also interesting on this example is the center chronograph hand, which appears to be the same design as the orange 'Ultraman' hand. The serial and delivery date would also fit into the Ultraman range. This transitional period between the pear chrono hand and the flat bottom chrono hand would make sense to be applied on other models, but it is still fascinating to see a sort of Albino Ultraman Chrono hand on a Racing dial.
This particular watch came from the family of the original owner, his nephew to be precise and after many years in our private collection we are looking forward to delivering it to its next caretaker.
