In 1992, Vacheron Constantin launched its automatic chronograph perpetual calendar, reference 43005 in 1992 to compete with the Patek Philippe manual wind 3970, which had a manual Lemania base while Vacheron opted for the automatic Frederic Piguet base. It kept the distinct Vacheron perpetual calendar layout with month subdial with 4 quadrants for leap year indication at 12. Approximately 500 pieces were produced of which the majority were in platinum (300 pieces) due to the prestige of the complication.
