In 1963, Rolex released the Cosmograph watch to measure and record elapsed time beginning with the reference 6239. This reference did not yet carry the name Daytona. It was powered by a Valjoux 72B manual wind column wheel chronograph movement, which Rolex reworked and improved internally. The watch had a tachymeter bezel and was fitted with pump pushers. Soon after, the introduction of the name Daytona was often seen on Rolex chronographs. This name came from the beach town in Florida, USA, where the famous Daytona race took place every year.
The reference 6265 & 6263 were fitted with 'Sigma' dials during a short period and there are different variants of the Sigma dials with either the sigma inside the hashes or outside the hashes, but all from the early 1970's up to about 1974/1975. These variants do not have Daytona mentioned on the dial.
