Vintage Bulova Marine Star Chronograph in excellent condition

MOVEMENT:
Valjoux 7731, Hand-wound mechanical, 23 jewels

DIAL:
Back dial with luminous ‘Art Deco’ style indexes with white sword shaped hour/minutes hands and arrow shaped central chronograph seconds hand.

CASE:
Excellent condition, large 43mm Stainless Steel, screw-down crown, black rotating uni-directional 60min bezel, caseback engraved with 10 star logo with anchor & helm and BULOVA, MARINE STAR, SWISS MADE, 50M

NOTES:
The Marine Star is an atypical Bulova in terms of style and design. This model is known as one of three very similar Military pieces along with the Zenith CP-2 for A Cairelli and the Excelsior Park Montecarlo. There are rumors that Cairelli actually stopped paying Zenith and as a consequence Zenith stopped a large order of cases from being delivered to them. The similarity in dials, hands, bezels and cases seems to be no coincidence. It is believed the unfinished components were then marketed by the case manufacturer to other companies and rebranded. This is speculative, of course, but a nice story indeed.

Bulova was established in 1875 in Queens, New York by an immigrant from Bohemia named Joseph Bulova. Bulova was acquired by the Loews Corporation in 1979, and then again by Citizen in 2008, but continues to operate independently from the same New York location.
It was around 1911 that Bulova began selling Bulova branded clocks and pocket watches. They were an almost immediate success and roundly appreciated for their accuracy and fine workmanship.
