NOTES: After Breitling had become known for dominating the skies in the early 1950’s with its pilot watches, it decided to try its hand at the sea with the SuperOcean model and launched in 1957. This particular model reference 2005 is unique because of its peculiar minute chronograph hand. The vast majority of chronographs feature a large central hand that serves as a seconds counter, however this model is fitted with a hand that moves each minute and no running seconds. The circular opening on the dial indicates a black dot when reset and the chronograph is not engaged, a large ivory dot when running, and a small ivory dot when stopped.
By the sixties, the chronograph boom had definitely had its day, and Venus closed its doors in 1966. Its assets were absorbed by Valjoux, which discontinued column-wheel production and concentrated on the Venus cam movement, such as the 188, instead. Chronograph development was then dormant for decades following.
